On Jan. 29, 1891, an alarm went up that hostile warriors were going to attack near Salisbury. This was brought on by someone claim ing to hear war whoops and bloodthirst y yells while ob serving smoke in the distance. The fear of an assault was relayed abroad by telegraph wire and the Fort Worth and Denver Railroad. The citizens then barricaded themselves to wait for the soon-to-be onslaught....
