Roy Kelton Orbison was born in 1936 in Vernon. He was a singer, songwriter and guitarist known for his distinctive and powerful voice. Roy was the second of three sons born to Orbie Lee Orbison and Nadine Vesta Shults.
Jim Leggitt mentions how the three principal characters in his Christmas Star story, his dad, Bura Handley and Griff Finley, really became the wise men. He described how none of them had a college degree, and in his dad’s case, never even finished high school, but each gained a knowledge of the real direction life should take and each served as an excellent community example of what a husband and father should be. 80th anniversary tribute

When 14 young soldiers from Collingsworth County woke up that bitterly cold, foggy Saturday morning, Dec. 16, 1944, in Neufchateau, Belgium, they had no idea, that within 48 hours, they would be thrown into one of the greatest pitched battles on the Western Front in all of World War II.
