“Among the men who fought on Iwo Jima, uncommon valor was a common virtue.” – Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz. 1st Lt. John Keith Wells, the Marine commander responsible for raising the first flag atop MT. Suribachi, died on Feb. 11, just days shy of the 71st anniversary of his time on Iwo Jima.

F.O. Masten: Master farmer and benefactor

The agricultural leader of Collingsworth County, including the High Plains and South Plains for decades, was Francis Oral Masten. He was born in June 1890, the oldest of 11 children of William Cornelius Masten Jr. and Mary Fields at Illinois Bend, Montague County,Texas.
