Memories Left for My Kids

As a little kid, I was enamored with heights. My grandparents had one of the few two-story houses in Wellington. There were seats beneath the upper windowsills that doubled as storage cabinets, mostly for out-of-season clothes and blankets.

We all learned in history class that Texians were white immigrants to Mexican Texas who supported the Texas Revolution. We were also taught that the 1876 act of the Texas legislature which established Collingsworth County misspelled the namesake of the county, James Collinsworth.

Wellington Senior Citizens Center (WSCC) celebrates its January birthday honorees with cake and ice cream at noon on Wednesday, Jan. 14 at the Senior Community Café. Attendees enjoyed a chicken fried steak meal prior to the party.

My grandfather, John B. Hardwicke, was a student at Texas A&M University when America entered World War I. He and the rest of the student body left to fight the war. His oldest son was at Texas A&M when Pearl Harbor was attacked.
