COVID by the states

There’s an uptick in COVID-19 cases, a new variant (BA.2.86) and a vaccine coming out next month – but the statistics of states and territories are definitely interesting.

In a strange irony, Arizona may have been slower at picking up the virus, but Arizona’s COVID deaths per 1,000,000 population is the nation’s highest, sitting at 4,633 (many retirees), followed by West Virginia, Mississippi and New Mexico (poverty).

The four that landed under 2,000 are Hawaii, Puerto Rico (no winters), Vermont and Utah (perhaps better health and healthcare delivery, since the death rate was almost half that of the U.S.).
