Pondering the world of armadillo mothers

I’m enough of a Texas trivia person to know that the ninebanded armadillo are completely unique in having identical quadruplets (four boys or four girls) nurtured by one placenta and born in the spring.

Why it is that way is the big mystery, but the mothers seem to do quite well with this arrangement. The babies look very much like armadillos – just a much smaller version.
