I’ve given lots of piano concerts over the years, but one day I broke a string, and it flew out into the audience. But there are worse things. One day… Sometimes, God gets you out of your routine to get your attention. I had said “yes,” but part of me wanted to say “no.” During high gas prices (summer of 2022), I was asked to make a quick road trip to Lubbock and back just to play one piece, “One Day,” on the piano for a birthday celebration. But I was thinking about Luke 6:30, “Give to every man that asketh of thee,” so I said “yes.” I took the north route – through Turkey – for variety and had a short nap in Plainview. I-27 was simply unreal as thousands of little, puffy clouds filled the sky.
“One day, he’s coming! O, glorious day!” Already worth the trip. I stared a bit at the ancient upr ight piano. Grand! My time came soon enough, and I attacked the keyboard with my full intensity. But then, toward the end of my arrangement, I broke the pedal. Maybe I should have been less intense! I finished anyway and took off for home.
Happy 95th, Maxine!
