Memphis Independent School District Superintendent William Alexander thanks Memphis High School senior Magaly Torres for showing integrity and respect, even when she believed no one was watching. After a recent football game, Torres got out of her vehicle and cleaned up trash left by other students. “No one asked Magaly to do so,” Alexander said. “She just did it because it was the right thing to do. A birthday is usually a day of leisure, but for Connie Mercado, last Thursday was routine, preparing the weekly luncheon at the Childress Senior Citizens Center. Her menu included oven-baked chicken spaghetti and baked potatoes, as well as other side dishes and an array of desserts. She did forego duties for the weekly diners, taking time out for guests at the center to sing “Happy Birthday” to her.
