The Childress Police Department released their June 2026 activity report today, Tuesday, June 30. "The Childress Police Department would like to reflect on what has been a very busy and, at times, difficult month for our community,” Childress Police Chief Jerrald Johnson said.
Today, hundreds gathered at Childress High School to pay their respects to Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Highway Patrol (THP) Trooper Sergio Romero, who was tragically killed in the line of duty last week.

AUSTIN – It is with great sadness that the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) announces the death of a Highway Patrol Trooper following a traffic crash in Childress County.Trooper Sergio Romero, 27, was attempting to conduct a traffic stop along US-287 near Childress around 4 p.m.
