James Colson, 86, of Wellington, Texas, passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2025.

Graveside services took place at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 1, 2025, at Memorial Gardens Cemetery, with Rev. Noah Downing, Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, officiating. Arrangements were by Adams Funeral Home of Wellington.

He was born on Oct. 18, 1938, in Wellington, to W.E. “Jack” and Viola B. Moody Colson and was a graduate of Quail High School.

James married Jamesie Clay on June 12, 1959, in Quail, Texas. She preceded him in death in 2023.

He moved to Wellington in 2023 after being a longtime resident of Lubbock, Texas, where he owned and operated Pride of the Plains Construction Company from 1967 until he retired in 2020.

James became an avid beekeeper, beginning in high school. He pursued his passion throughout his life, which led him to create South Plains Beekeeping Association from scratch.He was a diehard fan and season ticket holder for Texas Tech University Red Raiders’ football and basketball games—two sports he loved to watch.

His hobbies included racing sprint cars on regional tracks from 1967-1975, and he really enjoyed fishing, quail hunting and watching the Dallas Cowboys.

James was a lifelong Baptist.

He was also preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Marita Burton, in 2020.

James is survived by his son, Billy Colson and wife Janice, of Childress, Texas; two brothers, Ronnie Colson and wife Inois, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Darrell Colson and wife Rhonda, of Wellington; two grandsons, James Burton, of Lubbock, and Daniel Burton and wife Kathy, of Austin, Texas; four great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Zana, Katlyn and Teandra; and his great-greatgrandson, James.

The family suggests that memorials be made to any charity that deals with dementia.
