Funeral service for Carol Justine Fuson were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15, 2023, at Centenary United Methodist Church with Rev.James Graham, pastor, officiating.

Burial followed in Sunset Memorial Gardens under direction of Becker-Rabon Funeral Home.

Carol Justine Fuson, 88, of Lawton, Okla., died on Sunday, Dec. 10, 2023, at her home. She was born on June 22, 1935, in Portland, Maine to Curtis Lee and Theodora (Day) Thurman. Carol loved growing up in Portland and spending summers swimming and boating at the family cottage on Sebago Lake.

In 1955, Carol joined the Army and met her husband, CPL Lonnie Fuson. They were married in Portland on May 20, 1956. After Lonnie’s Army service ended, they moved to Wellington, Texas with family. To continue their education, they moved to Norman, Okla. Carol received her bachelor’s degree in 1959 from the University of Oklahoma. Lonnie received his doctorate in 1969, also from the University of Oklahoma. Lonnie accepted a professor position in Tahlequah, Okla.at Northeastern State University. Carol accepted a fourth-grade teaching position at Cherokee Elementary School in Tahlequah, where she taught until they retired.

Carol was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and Oklahoma Retired Teachers (CCREA). Carol loved to spend time with family and friends. She loved to read the Bible. She was truly an Angel on earth. Carol will be missed by all her friends,family and all that met her.

Carol is survived by her husband, Dr. Lonnie W. Fuson, of the home; daughter Dr. Leighetta Sue Fuson, of Norman; daughter Dana Lynne Gracien, of Lawton; a son, Lonnie Warren Fuson II, of Lawton; grandchildren Kimberly Lynne Leonard and Joe Michael Leonard, of Lawton; and a great-granddaughter, Peyton Ray Lynne Leonard, of Enid, Okla.

Her parents and her sister, Nancy Barnes, preceded her in death.
