R L Hunnicutt Sr., 85, of Wellington, Texas, transitioned to glory on Sunday, Dec. 17, 2023, at his home.
A homegoing celebration of his life took place at noon Saturday,Dec.23,2023,at the First Baptist Church in Wellington with Elder Herman Moore, of Amarillo, Texas, officiating. Burial followed in Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Adams Funeral Home of Wellington.
R L Hunnicutt Sr. was the sixth child of 10 born to Joel and Addie Bell Hunnicutt on June 9, 1938. He served in three branches of service, U.S. Army,Air Force and National Guard. R L retired from the Texas Department of Transportation. He served as the pastor of Victory Temple Full Gospel Church for 34 years in Wellington.
He married Fredonia Meadows on March 26, 1960. They were married 63 years, and the couple honored their vows until his death. To this union, five children were born, Silvia, Mark, Traci, Jodi and R L Jr. II “Snapper.” He had an older daughter, Doris Thomas.
The Collingsworth County Chamber of Commerce honored R L and Fredonia with a Lifetime Achievement Award on Oct. 2, 2023, for their service of 63 years to the community of Wellington. He was a Booker T. Washington Alumni, baseball player and boxer,and R L loved to fish. His first job was working with his father at the Ritz Theatre.
His parents and nine siblings, including six brothers, Frank, William, James Leonard, JC James Charles, Carter Bobo and Larry Hunnicutt, and three sisters, Genevie, Georgia Lee and Marie Hunnicutt, preceded him in death, along with two children, Mark, and Traci Hunnicutt.
R L will always be missed and cherished by his loving wife, Fredonia Hunnicutt; and children, Silvia (Steve) Gardner, of Gastonia, N.C., Doris ( Jay) Thomas, of Hollis, Okla., R L Jr. II (Paulette), of Oklahoma City, Okla., Jodi (Jimmye) Bookman and Meisha Hunnicutt, both of Wellington. He was loved by 20 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Sally (TJ) Jones; the entire Meadows family; loving cousins, nieces and nephews; the Hunnicutt family; and a host of other friends and family.
