Mozelle Gowdy Richburg, 99, of Memphis, Texas, died, Tuesday, May 1, 2024, in Memphis.
Services took place at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at the Memphis Methodist Church with Dr. Stan Cosby officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2024, in the DFW National Cemetery in Dallas, Texas. Arrangements are by Robertson Funeral Directors of Memphis.
Mozelle was born May 17, 1924, in Lakeview, Texas, to Euna Payne Gowdy and W.M. Gowdy Sr. She graduated from business college in Lubbock, Texas, and later, she married James Milton Richburg on Dec. 29, 1945.
She had been a lifetime resident of Hall County, Texas, where she worked as a secretary in the insurance business for decades and as a devoted homemaker. She was the matriarch of the family, was the best cook in the world and was known for her buttermilk pies.
She hosted many gatherings for friends, as well as for family. Her family always looked forward to staying with her for the holidays and family reunions. To her grandkids, she was lovingly known as Mere. She was a devoted member of the Memphis Methodist Church, where she was involved in the United Methodist Women.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2019; her sonin- law, Larry Don Smith, in 2020; a brother, W.M. Gowdy Jr.; and a sister, Willa Dean Nivens.
Survivors include her sons, Lewis Richburg and wife Donnita, of Canyon, Texas, and Bill Richburg, of Memphis; her daughter, Joyce Smith, of Perryton, Texas; her brothers, Jim Gowdy and wife Kathy, of Amarillo, and Jerry Gowdy, of Abilene, Texas; seven grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
