From Granite Falls, Brad moved to South Dakota, Oklahoma and Texas to work on a few ranches and other odd jobs. He eventually became self-employed as a welder, mainly in construction and fabrication.

Brad met his longtime companion, Maritta Cummings, in the 1980s. They were together in Wellington until Maritta died in 2007.
