Avis Whitten, 91, of Wellington, Texas, passed away Tuesday,May 28,2024.

Funeral services took place at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 1, 2024, at the First Baptist Church with Keith Martin and Rev. Ronnie Lambert, pastor, officiating. Burial followed in North Fairview Cemetery. Arrangements were by Adams Funeral Home of Wellington.

Michael Breedlove, Justin Whitten, Parker O’Rear, Joey Whitten, Joseph Whitten and Phillip Whitten served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Jared Warrick and Miles O’Rear.

She was born on May 6, 1933, in Littlefield, Texas, to John W. and Mora L. Smith Powell and came to Wellington with her family in 1943.

Avis graduated from Wellington High School in 1950 and married Lonnie Whitten on Sept. 2 in Childress, Texas that same year. He preceded her in death in 1988.

She served as the bookkeeper for Owens and Sons, Inc. from 1973 until she retired in 1996 and volunteered delivering meals for the Home Delivered Meals program for many years.

Avis was an active member of the First Baptist Church as long as she was able. She taught the Willing Workers Sunday School Class for over 20 years.

She was also preceded in death by a sister; three brothers; and a great-grandson, Jacer Warrick, in 2020.

Her survivors include two sons, Joe Whitten and Stanley Whitten, both of Jones, Okla.; three daughters, Wanda Breedlove,Kathy Warrick and husband Marty, and Christie O’Rear and husband Richard, all of Wellington; her brother, Clyde Powell, of Shamrock, Texas; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
