Charlene White Poteet, age 100, former longtime resident of Wellington,Texas, passed away Friday, Jan. 12, 2024, in Rockwall,Texas, surrounded by her loving family.
Funeral services took place at 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, 2024, at the First Christian Church with Minister Brian Moore officiating. Burial followed in Fairview Cemetery in Wellington. Arrangements were by Adams Funeral Home of Wellington. The family received friends at the funeral home from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17.
Jon Sessions, Marty Warrick, Brett Stuart, Cole Allen, Danny West and Redgie Souder served as pallbearers.
Born on July 30, 1923, in Childress, Texas, to Charles and Gola Thomas White, Charlene graduated from Childress School and received her associate degree from Clarendon College.
Charlene married Kenyard Poteet on Aug. 24, 1960, in Amarillo,Texas. He preceded her in death in 1984.
She served as the secretary for Collingsworth County Judges Zook Thomas, Jim Forrester and John James over a span of 28 years and served as the Collingsworth County Emergency Management Coordinator for many years. Charlene worked as the female probation officer for District 6, and she also served on the Panhandle Regional Planning Commission Criminal Justice Board in Amarillo.
In 1995, KVII TV Channel 7 in Amarillo honored Charlene as a “7 Who Care” award recipient for her immense volunteer work in her community.
The consummate volunteer, Charlene served as a member of numerous organizations. Some she served as a board member and others as past president.These included Collingsworth County and District 1 Child Protective Services Boards, the Wellington Business and Professional Women’s Club, and since 1960, as an active member in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary at the local, district and state levels.
She also served on the boards of District 6 Mental Health/Mental Retardation, the Wellington Sheltered Workshop, Texas Council of Child Welfare Board in Austin, the Panhandle Library Association, Collingsworth County Chamber of Commerce and the Collingsworth County Museum.
A longtime member of the First Christian Church, Charlene participated in the services on a regular basis and stayed active for as long as possible.
She was also preceded in death by her father, mother and stepfather,Theodor Bierworth; two sisters,Helen Pryor and Thelma Hudson; and her grandson, David Davenport, in 1981.
Charlene is survived by her twin daughters, Judy Larson and Carolyn Maynard and her husband, Von, both of Rockwall; four grandchildren, Rick Cawthon, Randy Cawthon, Shelly Allen and Danna Kent; nine great-grandchildren, Kristopher, Josh, Zach, Ryan, Alissa, Blake, Alex, Anna and Payton; and nine great-great-grandchildren, Cole, Cash, Lauren, Taylor, Brody, Rhyder, Cooper, Raylee and Georgia.
