Jackie Wayne Barnett

Body

He’d tell you he wasn’t shiny. He preferred unstarched Wrangler jeans and shirts and wore his clothing, boots and ropers until falling apart. He believed a house was to be lived in, and if fussed at about tracking in mud, he’d say he’d go live in the barn. His language was sprinkled with old cowboy and West Texas lingo, teasing and favorite pet names.

He never liked talking over the phone; in person was always best. He would loan a friend anything he owned but never borrow anything. He didn’t discuss sports unless it was hunting or roping. He didn’t discuss religion or politics, but he was proud to be a Christian, and American and a Mason. He loved classic country and bluegrass music, Browning shotguns and Harley Davidson motorcycles.

Jack was happiest in the wide-open country. He loved old tractors especially a Poppin ‘Johnny. He loved all critters, but horses, mules, cows, dogs, cats and goats were his favorites. In his language, horses were snides, calves were simons, dogs, cats and goats were houndie-pie, cattie-pie and goatie-pie.

He flirted with babies and respected old women. He rarely spoke of love until his later years, but his family had no doubts about his intense love for them.
