Jimmy Howell, 84, of Wellington, Texas, passed away Monday, July 31, 2023.
A visitation in his memory took place from 10 a.m.noon Saturday, Aug. 5, 2023, at Adams Funeral Home. He was buried in the family plot in North Fairview Cemetery in Wellington. Arrangements were by Adams Funeral Home of Wellington.
He was born on Dec. 19, 1938, in Hollis, Okla., to J.C. and Helen Wesson Howell.
Jimmy grew up in Dodson, Texas, where his parents owned the local grocery store, JC Howell Grocery and Market.
He graduated from Dodson High School, where he played basketball and earned a scholarship to play at Wayland Baptist University. He also attended West Texas A&M University and Eastern New Mexico University to receive his bachelor’s and master’s degree in education.
Jimmy began his teaching career in Clovis, N.M. in the early 1960s, teaching Civics and New Mexico History to ninth graders for many years.
He was active in the local Kiwanis Club, a member of the 16th and Pile St. Church of Christ and later, the 21st Street Church of Christ in Clovis.
Jimmy loved hunting for arrowheads, watching football and quoting lines from epic poems.
In 2019, he moved back “home”to Wellington, where he lived for three and a half years at Parkview Manor Assisted Living. In December 2022, he moved to Wellington Care Center, where he spent his last days.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Janet Howell; and the mother of his children, Laverne, in 2022.
He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Howell, of Clovis, whom he married in 1992; his daughter and son in law, JIMMY HOWELL
Jennifer and Scott Ingalls, of Seattle, Wash.; and three grandchildren, Jonathan Ingalls and Rebekah Ingalls Griffith, of Seattle, and Jacob Ingalls, of New Orleans, La.
The family would like to give their thanks to Holly Landess and her staff at Parkview Manor Assisted Living, located in Wellington, the nurses and aides of Wellington Care Center and Gentiva Hospice for the wonderful care they gave Jimmy.
