John Alf Thomas, 83, of Wellington, Texas, passed away Friday, Dec. 23, 2022.

Graveside services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2022, in North Fairview Cemetery with his nephew, Tom Farris, of Amarillo, officiating. Arrangements were by Adams Funeral Home of Wellington.

He was born March 21, 1939, in Midland, Texas, to Zook and Leatha Bennett Thomas, and he married Geneva White on June 9, 1957, in Wellington.

John Alf graduated from Quail High School in 1957, Clarendon College, Gupton Jones Mortuary College, located in Dallas, and later, Texas Tech University.

He taught school in Quail, Texas, Samnorwood, Texas, Lela, Texas and Briscoe, Texas. He retired from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) after serving 11 years as a council substitute and correctional officer, all while farming and ranching.

John Alf served as a former member of the Samnorwood Lions Club and the Quail Young Farmers and as a member of the Church of Christ and the Amarillo Corvette Club. He volunteered with the West Texas Rehab Telethon in San Angelo for 30 years. After retirement, he and Geneva joined the Clinton Jamboree Travelers bus tours.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Nancy Lindsey Adair.

John Alf ’s survivors include his wife, Geneva, of Wellington; a daughter, LaVonda Hartman, of Mustang, Okla.; a son, Lindy Thomas, of Wellington; four grandchildren, Tyler Hartman, Charlie Hartman and Sierra, Garrett Thomas and Jaylann Thomas; three great-grandchildren, Mollee Hartman and Benjamin and Olivia Hartman; and many nieces and nephews.
