ODESSA CAMP COVEY

Odessa Camp Covey, of Wellington, Texas, died on May 30, 2023.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 2, 2023, at North Fairview Cemetery in Wellington with Rev. Gene Weinette, pastor of the First Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will follow. Arrangements are by Adams Funeral Home of Wellington.

Ima Odessa “O D” Camp was born at home during a snowstorm in 1925 to Cliff Camp and Grace Isabelle Lewis Camp. She and her twin, Olyse, attended schools in the Kelley Community and at Dodson School and graduated at Wellington High School in 1942.

Both Odessa and Olyse attended Draughon’s Business College in Lubbock, Texas. Afterward, they both worked at the Army Air Force Base in Pampa, Texas. Odessa met her future husband, Fred Covey, in high school. They married in 1945 shortly after World War II ended.

Odessa served as an active member of the First United Methodist Church. At the age of 13, she joined the Kelley Community Methodist Church. In Wellington, she was a member of the Carter Sunday School Class, the choir and the Lydia Circle of the United Methodist Women. She also served on the Administrative Board for the Methodist Church. A breast cancer survivor, she loved the Lord and wanted others to know Him.

Odessa’s hobbies were playing the piano, piecing quilts, laying mosaic tiles and upholstering furniture. She made more than one quilt for all her children and grandchildren. She and her sisters collected Depression glass, and she was a great cook and loving homemaker. Odessa always had a meal prepared and in the freezer from which she freely shared hospitality with so many friends and family.

Odessa is preceded in death by her husband, Fred; her sister, Evelyn and husband Lynn Carter, and her twin sister, Olyse and husband Art Kane; and her parents, Cliff and Grace Camp.

Odessa is survived by a son, Sandy and wife Sharon Covey and two daughters, Leslie Moore and Kelly Cummings. Grandchildren are Scott Covey, Paul Covey, Heather Martinez, Gretchen Judah, Allison Fannin, Tell Cummings, Sierra Hartman, Rusty Cummings and Jodi Cummings. Also, there are 18 great-grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

The family would like to thank all the caregivers at the assisted living facility who made her laugh, cared for her and made the last two years comfortable after giving up her home.

The family suggest that memorials can be made to the First Methodist Church, P.O. Box 767, Wellington, TX 79095, or Collingsworth County Home Delivered Meals, P.O. Box 228, Wellington, TX 79095.
