Visitation with the family will be from 4:305:30 p.m. at the Christian Church in Stratford. Sue always considered Stratford as her home, even though she had been gone for 50 years. Mrs. Haile passed from this life on April 29, 2024, in Childress, Texas.
She attended Clarendon College, graduated from Tarleton State University and got her teaching certificate from Sam Houston State University. She first taught home economics and was the cheerleader sponsor for three squads in Monahans, Texas. She then received her library science certification from the University of Texas. She shared a story about her time in Austin, Texas, “I looked at the capital every day and thought, ‘What the heck am I doing here?’” Sue’s conclusion was that her time in Austin was well spent because it is where she made good friends and got her certification to be a librarian.
She then became the district librarian for Childress Independent School District (ISD) for 21 years. Sue also served as student council sponsor and class sponsor over the years.
Sue was active in community activities, ranging from a 4-H leader to the president of several civic clubs, as well as volunteering at the New4U Thrift Store in Childress and driving others to doctors’ appointments in Amarillo, Lubbock and Wichita Falls.
Sue also made and sold Flying V Barbeque Sauce, which was an old family recipe. She was also part owner of the Star of Texas RV Park and Horse Hotel in Stratford.
She loved to travel and go to places and had attended several Olympic events around the world.
She had always had dogs or cats. Her current dog was Mazie, a rescue Boxer, who shared her house with her. She lived in the same house in Childress for over 30 years, having done many improvements during her time there. She had installed a pool in her backyard, where she spent most summer afternoons. Everyone was invited to come and enjoy a swim or visit as they passed through Childress.
The family that Sue leaves behind are a brother, Jack Haile, and his wife, Barbara; and two nieces, Evan Haile, her husband, Neil Turner, and their son, Rowan, and Olivia Om. Also included are a close family of cousins and a host of amazing friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Sherman County Library, P.O. Box 46, Stratford, TX 79084, or the Childress Methodist Church, 201 Ave. D NE, Childress, TX 79201.
