It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Thomas Russell “Tommy” Hudson Jr., formerly of Wellington, Texas, who peacefully left this earthly realm on May 1, 2024, in Canyon, Texas.
Born on Feb. 28, 1950, the beloved son of Russell and Betty Jo Harrison Hudson, Tommy was preceded in death by his father and mother and by his first wife, Beverly, who together had two children.
Tommy is survived by his two children, Holly Landess and Kent Hudson with spouse Karrie Hudson, both of Wellington; and his sister, Mary Jo and spouse Jerry Newton. Tommy was also a loving grandfather to four grandchildren, Tyler Landess, Thomas Landess and spouse Skylar, Natalie Hudson and Sadie Hudson.
United in marriage to Linda Bain in 2019, Tommy gained three stepchildren, Stacey Van Tassel, Carolyn Van Tassel and Garry Van Tassel, eight step-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
Tommy attended Morton High School, graduating in 1968, before moving on to further his education at Texas Tech University, where he graduated in 1972. He went on to have a successful career at American Electric Power, retiring in 2010.
Outside of his professional life, Tommy served as an active member of the Wellington Volunteer Fire Department for 30 years, where he selflessly volunteered his time and expertise, and with the ambulance service in Wellington for three years. He was awarded numerous accolades for his dedication and service.
Tommy had a passion for hunting and airplanes and could often be found indulging in these hobbies in his spare time. His love for the outdoors was a true reflection of his adventurous spirit.
Funeral service took place at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 4, 2024, at Family Worship Center in Amarillo with Pastor Ronnie Woodward and Associate Pastor Danny Rendon officiating. Arrangements were by La-Grone Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors.
Tyler Landess, Thomas Landess, Jerry Newton, Chase Rangel, Jacob Shynett and Garry Van Tassel served as pallbearers, and Sandy Covey, Gary Lemons, B.J. Smith and Danny Wisely served as honorary pallbearers.
Interment followed at 2 p.m. at North Fairview Cemetery in Wellington with Pastor Noah Downing of Calvary Baptist Church as graveside officiant.
Tommy passed away after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
