Wanda Rose Phipps Daugherty, 85, of Mesquite, Texas, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2022.
Wanda Rose was born April 30, 1937, the first child of Mathew Dudley Phipps and Naomi Ruth Monk Phipps in Wellington,Texas at her aunt’s home. She had two sisters that followed, Glenda Gay and Sharon Anita, and then two brothers, Martin David and Denzil Floyd.
Wanda grew up on a farm, just outside Wellington. She graduated Quail High School in 1955, where her grades scored her the position of first in her class. She served as queen of Collingsworth County Farm Bureau her junior year and second runner- up in Wheatheart of the Nation.
Wanda married Raymond Glen Daugherty, of Dodson, Texas, on June 30, 1955, and the couple moved to Amarillo, Texas.They had three children, Craig, Denise and Glenna.
She worked for Pantex for many years. Wanda served as a member of the First Baptist Church. She was active in Camp Fire Girls, serving as president of the board. She worked in politics with the League of Women Voters, was campaign manager for a successful Texas House race and was a volunteer for Jimmy Carter’s presidential campaign.
In 1982, Wanda moved to Irving, where she completed her bachelor’s degree at UT Arlington a few years later. She volunteered with the Irving Symphony Orchestra, where she met many new, wonderful friends. She became president of the association’s board. She was a member of the Friends of the Library in Irving, where she helped with book sales and getting authors to come for an engagement about their book.
Wanda traveled extensively to many destinations across the world. She studied her genealogy to learn her history. She loved Elvis Presley and Kirk Douglas. She loved Ray. Wanda had many friends and close acquaintances WANDA ROSE PHIPPS DAUGHERTY
during the life she led. She had a wonderful life and was deeply loved by all she touched. She will be missed.
Wanda is survived by her husband, Ray; children Craig, Denise and Glenna; grandchildren Elizabeth and Derek; sister Sharon Anita Venable, of Wellington; and brother Denzil Phipps, of Wheeler.
Services for Wanda included a visitation from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 24 at Adams Funeral Home in Wellington. A graveside service followed at 2 p.m. at North Fairview Cemetery.
