New housing units planned for Childress

CHILDRESS – New housing options are in the works for the City of Childress, according to information announced this week by Redd Dog Development, LLC.

The company says it plans to break ground in November on an apartment complex on the former site of Starlight Skate at 100 S. Main, and Redd Dog also has plans to sell residential lots and to eventually build and sell starter homes in the city.

Redd Dog Development was founded by Neil Clatterbuck and Gianna Trzesniewski to fill a growing need for housing in Childress. Trzesniewski said Clatterbuck purchased a ranch near Childress and moved here about six years ago and then realized the difficulty of finding and keeping an employee.

“It’s hard to find an employee if you don’t have a place for them to live,” she said. “We saw the need in the community. We plan to stay here, and fortunately, we’re able to do this project.”

Redd Dog’s plan is to build 44 long-term rental units, which will be one bedroom efficiency apartments.

Trzesniewski says they purchased and razed the old skate rink and are working with officials to move the driveway entrance to make it safer before construction begins next month. There currently isn’t a timeline for when the project will be completed, she said.

Redd Dog also will be selling city lots for residential construction. Buyers can build their own homes, or they can use a contractor Redd Dog is working with – Jon Fuller and New Life Homes – and choose one of three models of homes.

Trzesniewski said the feedback has been mostly positive from the community, although she said some people were sad to see the skate rink torn down, and everyone is concerned about water.

“We don’t ever want to burden the system, and we will shut down if it becomes a problem,” she said. “The city has been supportive.”

Trzesniewski also said she and Clatterbuck want to support the community in other ways. They have offered land to build a new animal shelter, and they plan to donate land to the city for a possible youth center as well, she said.
