CHILDRESS — Due to the recent evictions of residents at the 75-unit Madison Chase complex, residents have organized a peaceful protest, scheduled for 5 p.m. Friday, July 10.
“Residents have been reporting that the largest multi-family complex in the City of Childress has been denying all lease renewals,” City of Childress Secretary D’Linda Dockery said. “Current-but-soon-to-beevicted tenants have arranged a peaceful protest to advocate for local tenants.”
According to Dockery, tenants reported receiving lease renewal letters, dated May 13, indicating that they must renew their lease by June 30. However, when the tenants tried to renew their leases, they were denied.
“When the tenants went to renew leases, they were told that the new owners would not be renewing any of the leases for the current tenants of the complex,” Dockery said.
According to the letters received by tenants, the complex was purchased by AL’s Village- Condominiums, located in San Angelo. Tenants were given 30 days from the date of lease expiration to vacate the premises.
According to AL’s Village- Condominiums, the units at Madison Chase will be turned into “luxury corporate housing.”
The company states that the units will be ideal for “corporate travelers, traveling healthcare professionals, business professionals and relocating employees,” with all bills, including utilities and high-speed Wi-Fi, paid and fully furnished units. Month-to-month, as well as long-term, leasing options will be available.
“With limited to no housing locally, residents are facing the unimaginable hardship of having to uproot and relocate their families in a matter of weeks,” Dockery said.
