Boss C. Proby Jr., age 97 years, was born Nov. 12, 1924, in Idabel, Mc-Curtain County, Okla. to Boss C. Proby and Annie Lieutia Miller.

Boss was preceded in death by his mother and father; three brothers, Rudolph (RP/Shag) Proby, Wilford (Tursh) Proby and Elisha (Gip) Proby; two sons, Melvin Gene Proby and Rudolph Proby; and one daughter, Rose Marie Proby.

Boss leaves behind his life partner of 45 years, Ester Leola Fields; three daughters, Annie Mae Hearn, of Paris, Texas, Linda Kay Walker, of Dallas, Texas, and Oletha Gail Proby, of Memphis, Texas; and five sons, John Louis Marshall, of Cedar Hill, Texas, Billy James Proby, of Dallas, Marshall Glenn Proby, of DeSoto, Texas, Alwin Lynn Fields, of Aurora, Colo., and Terry Eugene Fields, of Memphis. He also leaves behind 27 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren,15 great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

In Boss’ early years, he lived in several cities, including Idabel, Oklahoma City, Okla., Amarillo, Texas and Red River, Kiomatia County, Texas, before settling in Memphis in 1950.

He was a farmer the majority of his life and retired in 2008 after working in his last position for Thollie Lindley for 25 years. An avid gardener, Boss raised a garden every year until the summer of 2022, prior to his passing. Most of the crop he raised he gave to neighbors.

A very proud man that would always assist others in need, Boss was slow to accept help himself. He loved to joke with a straight face. If you did not know him, you would take him seriously. He also liked to engage in debates, which often lead to some mention of the Bible.

Boss departed this life peacefully at 11:17 a.m. Sept. 8, 2022, in Childress, Childress County, Texas under the care of the Childress Regional Medical Center staff.

Boss’ final wish was to be cremated.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022, in Robertson Funeral Directors Heritage Chapel in Memphis.
