DAN COLLOM

Dan Collom, 86, of Rotan, Texas, passed from this life and into eternal rest on Monday, December 26, 2022, in Bangs,Texas.

He was born on August 15, 1936, in Rotan, to William Jordan and Emma Luttrall Collom. Dan was one of 10 children. He was educated in Stonewall County,Texas. Dan found his calling to ministry early in life, delivering his first sermon at 17 in the Aspermont Central Baptist Church.

Dan ministered for 62 years officially as a Missionary Baptist and Foursquare pastor in Texas. Baptist congregations he served included: New Hope Baptist (Mineola, Texas), Forest Hills Baptist (Quitman, Texas), Faith Missionary Baptist (Paducah, Texas) and Bethel Baptist (Crowell, Texas). As a Foursquare minister, he served Higher Ground (Hamlin,Texas),FaithTemple (Lamesa, Texas), and Cornerstone Fellowship (Rotan). In 1970, he established the Faith Missionary Baptist Church in Childress,Texas.

Dan’s ministry was reflected through acts in the community, ranging from driving a bus to staying with congregation members at hospitals. Of particular note, Dan was the subject of a feature story in the Lubbock Avalanche Journal for carrying a cross on his shoulder throughout the Lamesa area. As a missionary, Dan adventured to Mexico several times and once to Kenya, Africa. Dan experienced a lifelong dream of visiting the Holy Lands. Throughout his career in the Foursquare Church, he received several commendations for his long tenure of service and dedication.

In 1971, Dan married his wife of 51 years, Billie Jane Detwiler. Together, they served in multiple roles for many of the aforementioned congregations.

Dan is preceded in death by his parents; all siblings, including his twin sister, Ann; his wife, Billie; a stepson, Gary Wayne Detwiler; and granddaughter Andrea Michelle Collom.

He is survived by his sons, Randy Collom and wife Vickie, of Bangs, Perry Collom and partner Randal Dukes, of Plano, Texas, Ricky Collom and wife Lorry Kay, of Amarillo, Texas; stepdaughter Janet Mullins and husband Tom, of Broken Arrow, Okla.; stepsons Robin Detwiler and wife Amy, of Sour Lake, Texas, and Randy Lewis Detwiler and wife Selina, of Paducah; grandchildren Cody Collom, Rebecca Bradley, Zeth Collom, Quay Gonzales, Sayre Tovar, Clancy Collom, Michael Mullins, David Mullins, Saxton Detwiler, Summer Bernhardt, Jason Detwiler, Zach Detwiler and Tana Detwiler and respective spouses; 30 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; several cousins and friends; and past and present congregation members.

The family would like to give special thanks to the congregation of the Cornerstone Fellowship Foursquare Church of Rotan for their kindness and understanding during the last few years of Pastor Dan’s health struggles and decline due to Alzheimer’s dementia.
