Bill Wilson, 78, of Wellington, Texas, a coach, teacher, friend and mentor to folks of all ages, passed away horseback while day working Monday, May 8, 2023.

Funeral services for Bill took place at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 11, 2023, at the First Methodist Church with Kenny Lee Tunstall, of Mangum, Okla., officiating. Burial followed in North Fairview Cemetery. Arrangements were by Adams Funeral Home of Wellington.

Don Allred, Kenny Tunstall, Jim Kingston, Jim Henard, Westin Williams, Darrell Duke, Robert Coffee and Barry Long served as pallbearers.

He was born on June 16, 1944, in Wellington, to Woodrow and Dollie Mae Brown Wilson and became a member by baptism of the Lillie Baptist Church in his youth.

Bill married Joline Groves on Sept. 4, 1971, in Wellington.

He graduated from Quail High School in 1962, then received his associate degree from Clarendon College and his bachelor’s degree in education from West Texas State University. He received additional certification from Wayland Baptist University.

Bill began his teaching and coaching career in Quail, Texas, then went on to Hollis, Okla., Lakeview, Texas and McLean, Texas. He retired from teaching in 1999 from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice’s Windham School District at the Roach Unit in Childress, Texas.

At an early age, Bill acquired his love for horses and dogs. He was a true cowboy and storyteller. He enjoyed day working, training cutting horses with Woody and judging National Cutting Horse Association and American Cutting Horse Association competitions.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Gano Wilson.

He is survived by his wife, Joline, of Wellington; son Woody Wilson and his wife, Rebecca, of South Fork, Colo.; his granddaughter and grandson, Emma and Jake; and his sister, Judith McQuay, and her husband, Joe, of Shamrock.

The family suggests that memorials be made to the Collingsworth County 4-H Horse Club in care of Adams Funeral Home, 1300 East Ave., Wellington, TX 79095.
