Larry Ross Davis, better known as “Rossie” to Childress, Texas and every opposing team the Bobcats entertained in Fair Park Stadium, made his way to heaven on Wednesday Feb. 5, 2025. His long life will be celebrated accordingly in the Childress High School Gymnasium at 10 a.m. Saturday Feb. 15, 2025.Everyone is encouraged to wear their favorite Bobcat, Dallas Cowboy or Texas Longhorn gear. Memorial donations in honor of Rossie can be made to Meals on Wheels or Childress Helping Hands.

Rossie was born on Nov. 7, 1949, in Childress to his loving parents, Odis Jethro “Jeff” and Hazel Marie Franklin Davis. He wore out the streets of his neighborhood, riding and racing bikes with friends Phillip Self, Charles “Chicken” Mitchell, John Sims and Doug Greer. He was never afraid to work and started shining shoes at the Palace Barber Shop at 16. He loved his dogs, Laverne and Shirley. He was an avid football fan, always following the Texas Longhorns and Dallas Cowboys. He was even the namesake for a men’s softball team, the LD Players. He was a custodial employee of Childress ISD from 1970-2006, where he watched several different generations walk the halls of Childress High School. He became friends, and some might even say, enemies, with some of those in the hall (all in good fun, of course). He was a prankster and had a dry, witty comeback for every situation. A quick shrug of his shoulders and “I don’t care” was Rossie’s way of handling anything stressful.

Rossie had a special way of becoming family... to everyone. His parents passed away in 1988, and we, as a community, held a silent and sacred commitment to them that we would continue to take care of him, love him and be his family. Over the years, Rossie was a part of family functions, family portraits and family holidays... for dozens of different families. Families carried Rossie thousands of miles to ball games, family trips, cruises to the Bahamas, fishing trips, rodeos and more. One adventure included an 8,000-mile, 15-day train ride around the United States with Coach Charlie Johnston. He spent countless hours with several Childress coaches, including Jackie Smith, Mark Manley and Rice Nippert to name a few. From birthdays to special occasions, his special friends Kacy Crouch and Stephanie Castor made sure he was celebrated, loved and always taken care of. He was a part of all of our families.

To Rossie, the community of Childress, every single one of your special friends and people who loved and cared for you, joked with you, celebrated you, gave you a place in their homes and their hearts, will miss you. ‘Til we see you again, ol’Ross Dawg!
