He played football and ran track for the Bobcats and is credited with running in the state track meet in his junior and senior years. After high school, he continued running track and playing football for Texas Christian University (TCU), where he notably assisted the Horned Frogs in winning the Southwest Conference Football Championship and played in the New Year’s Eve Cotton Bowl against Bear Bryant’s Kentucky Wildcats during the ’51-’52 season.

He married his love, Nelda June, on March 1, 1974, and together, they worked alongside each other at Rogers Lumber and grew in their shared love of church, family, community and each other. They attended and served together in the Methodist church and were long-time supporters and attendees of Bobcat sporting events and TCU football games. He served on the city council and school board, finished his working career with Childress Independent School District, and then, retired to the golf course and his bicycle.
