Joy Smith of Memphis, Texas, passed away on Sunday, July 14, 2024, in Memphis.

Funeral services took place at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, 2024, in the First Baptist Church in Estelline, Texas. Interment followed in Fairview Cemetery in Memphis under the direction of Robertson Funeral Directors of Memphis. The family received visitors from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, July 16 at the funeral home.

Joy Lynn was born in Memphis on Nov. 3, 1941, to Orval “Nig” and Mildred Phillips. She grew up in the Harrell Chapel community and attended school in Memphis. She married her husband, Jerry Don Smith, in 1959. She was a lifelong resident of the area.

She was preceded in death by her parents. Survivors include her husband, Jerry, of the home; a son, Jeffery Smith, of Memphis; and several extended family members.

Her life centered around her family, her work and her church. She was a loving wife and mother. Joy sold cosmetics for a number of years, then worked for several area businesses before working and retiring from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice in Childress, Texas.

At an early age, Joy made a profession of faith in Jesus and was baptized at First Baptist Church in Memphis. She taught Sunday School for a number of years and also served as church pianist at First Baptist Church in Memphis. Later in life, she was church pianist and a member of First Baptist Church in Estelline. Her hobbies included gardening and browsing on her computer, especially Facebook.
