Oscar Maddox Jr., 85, of Memphis, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, April 1, 2025, in Amarillo,Texas.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, April 4, 2025, at the First Baptist Church of Memphis with Rev. Daniel Downey and Mike Shults officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Memphis. Viewing took place from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday, April 3 at the funeral home with family receiving friends for visitation from 4-6 p.m. Arrangements are by Robertson Funeral Directors of Memphis.
Oscar was born in Memphis on Sept. 21, 1939, to Oscar and Ada May Evans Maddox. He graduated from Memphis High School, Class of 1958. It was love at first sight when Oscar met his wife of 63 years, Willie Mae Ward. The couple married on March 4, 1959, in Memphis, and later, had two daughters, Donna and Sherry.
Oscar was a farmer and a water well technician before settling into his career as an auto mechanic. He joined the family business and worked with his father for several years before buying him out. Oscar owned and operated Maddox Garage for 30 years.
Fishing was one of Oscar’s favorite hobbies, and he made trips to Club Lake as often as he could. He also enjoyed beating the summer heat in the mountains. Every year, Oscar would take his family tent camping. He loved cooking them breakfast by the fire.
While his daughters were in school, Oscar was very involved in their activities. He would often help with band equipment and even pulled the band trailer to out of town games. Oscar was a Memphis Cyclone Football fan through and through. Oscar also enjoyed playing slots, NASCAR races, and Dallas Cowboy football. He was a faithful member of the First Christian Church in Memphis.
Oscar is preceded in death by his parents; wife Willie Mae, in 2023; and his great-grandson, Kohen Maddox Lusk.
Survivors include his two daughters, Donna Blair and husband Rodney, of Amarillo, and Sherry Ross, of Amarillo; two brothers, Bobby Jack Maddox and wife Linda, and Robert Maddox and wife Camilla, both of Memphis; five grandchildren, Lindsay Lusk and husband Bleu, of Raton, N.M., Lauren Baldner and husband Philip, of Amarillo, Hailey Ross, of Fort Worth, Texas, Zachary Blair and wife Tori, of Amarillo, and Jared Blair and wife Jocelyn, of Newark, Texas; nine great-grandchildren, Avery and Easton Lusk, Jenna Ciara, Serene and Xzabyan Blair and Hazel, Genesis and Faith Blair; and numerous nieces and nephews.
